'The Rebel'
Explanation:
D. J. Enright's poem titled 'The Rebel' primarily aims to highlight the significance of having differences in thoughts and opinions as it associates change. He does this through the example of a rebel boy who does differently from others. When the other people around him have long hair, he keeps it short and when the others have short hair, he prefers long hair. In the class, when everyone is talking during the lesson, he stays quiet and when others remain silent, he loves to create a disturbance. He dresses up fancy when everyone puts up sober clothes.
When everyone loves dogs, he loves cats. And this goes on with rain and the sun and also with the meeting and book reading. He always goes the opposite way. The poet asserts that rebels are good for a society as they resist against the majority opinion for a productive purpose yet it is difficult to be one(who opposes majority). However, the word 'rebel' denotes a 'negative' meaning, the poet has employed it in a positive sense to convey the idea of 'importance of having rebels(difference in opinions) for keeping the creativity, discussions, progress alive.
