Angina pectoris: Chest pain due to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle. The pain is typically severe and crushing, and it is characterized by a feeling of pressure and suffocation just behind the breastbone. Angina can accompany or be a precursor of a heart attack.

Angina Pectoris:

Lack of blood flow in the heart muscles vasospasm or vascular occlusion of the arteries that supply the blood- This condition is Angina Pectoris. There are three types of angina pectoris namely,

  • Stable angina
  • Unstable angina
  • Cardiac Syndrome X

This can be quite painful with chest discomfort. Sometimes accompanied with pain in upper central abdomen-epigastrium. The major risk factors are hypertension, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol levels or family history.

Conditions that provoke angina:

  • Polycythemia
  • Hypothermia
  • Hypervolemia
  • Hypovolemia
  • Vasoconstrictors

Nitroglycerine is the most specific drug that is used to treat angina.
