The battle of Plassey was fought on 23rd January 1757 at Plassey, 130 km north of Calcutta between the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and East India Company. The Company forces under Robert Clive easily defeated the Nawab as the later's own chief army Generals had conspired against him and did't participate in war.The Company installed the puppet Mir Jaffar as the Nawab of Bengal.

Doctrine of Lapse :
The doctrine of lapse was adopted by Lord Dalhousie for the territorial expansion of East India Company. According to the doctrine, any princely state whose king dies without any legal heir would lapse to the East India Company. Accordingly many princely states were annexed under this doctrine which later became one of the reason of 1857 revolt.
