⚽Several polycyclic aromatic compounds are toxic and carcinogenic.

⚽eg. Benzene is oxidized to an epoxide, benzopyrene, in liver Benzopyrene is converted into epoxydiol.

⚽These substances can react with DNA and induce mutation leading to uncontrolled growth of certain cells. In this way, they cause cancer in the body.

⚽Carcinogenic compounds are produced by incomplete combustion of tobacco, coal and petroleum. Hence tobacco, coal are called cancer causing substances (carcinogenic substances).

Chemical carcinogens are agents that are capable of inducing cancer in humans or animals. Most of the many hundreds of chemical carcinogens known have been recognised as such as a result of tests in rats or mice.
