The Clemmensen reduction is an organic reaction used to reduce an aldehyde or ketone to an alkane using amalgamated zinc and hydrochloric acid. The mechanism for the Clemmensen reduction is not yet fully understood and there are two popular proposals.In Clemmensen reduction, the reason zinc amalgam works while chunks or powders of zinc metal does not, is that metallic zinc is “activated” by mercury by “dissolving” it into individual atoms of zinc that are distributed evenly in the alloy.
