The epidermis is thin or the outer layer of the skin which is visible and provides protection to the body, this outer layer provides access to the nutrients and disposing of the waste and thickness of epidermis depends on the protection required by a specific area.

The cork cells are used to replace the epidermis and the outer layer but they are used in plants unlike epidermis, these cells are packed together, there are pores in cork cells which enable the plants to breathe and also provide protection to the plants.
