The Subsidiary Alliance was the brainchild of British politician and historian Warren Hastings, to end French influence in Indian states. Fearing the increasing power wielded by the French in various princely states, the British sought to slowly alienate them.

However, like all policies of the British, it had several defects and disadvantages. It undermined and demoralised the Indian rulers of princely states.

It also resulted in heavy taxes on citizens, in the states where the Alliance was introduced.

The Subsidiary Alliance eventually led to the downfall of the British Empire since it sparked off several revolts and uprisings.
