It was during the administration of Lord Warren
Hastings that the Subsidiary system was introduced in India. It was brought in
mainly, to end the influence of French in Indian states. The British feared the
slowly rising popularity of the French in some India states.
Heavy taxation on citizens was a main feature of
the subsidiary system.
The common man found this heavy taxation unbearable
and the discontent led to revolt against the British.
