Under the Subsidiary Alliance System introduced by Lord Wellesley, a friendly Indian state’s ruler had to compulsorily take up a permanent post of the British force in his territory and pay a subsidized amount for its maintenance.
The Indian ruler also had no choice but to become a British resident in Lord Wellesley’s court.
An Indian ruler could not offer employment to a European without discussion with the British. Similarly, he could make negotiations with another ruler only after consultation with the Governor General.
Wellesley made 100 big and small states in India sign the Subsidiary Treaty.
