The Dhangars were a pastoral community of Maharashtra who moved in search of pasturelands. While most of the Dhangars were shepherds, some were blanket weavers and buffalo herders. The Dhangars moved during alternate dry and wet seasons. They lived in the central plateau of Maharashtra during the monsoon season. Because the region was dry with inadequate rainfall and poor soil, dry crops such as bajra was sown. During the rainy season, the tracts of lands in central Maharashtra plateau became grazing grounds for their cattle.

The Dhangar moved to the Konkan region by the end of October. Here, rich lands were available for their flocks. With the beginning of the monsoon season, the Dhangars left the plateau as extremely wet season was harmful for their sheep.
