Dichogamy is a condition in which anther and stigma of flowers attain maturity at different times.

Explanation:

  • Dichogamy prevents self-fertilization of plants. These plants show cross pollination.
  • In plants showing dichogamy, the pollen grains from the male part of the flower is blown away or carried away by insects, water and air while the stigma (female part) is still maturing. By the time the stigma matures, the pollen grains are already blown or taken away. Thus there is no chance of dichogamy.
  • Example: Dichogamy mostly occurs in insect-pollinated flowers. salvias and fireweed.
  • Dichogamy is also shown in animals like hermaphroditic animals. The ova and sperm mature at a different time to prevent self-fertilization.
