Hawkins arrived at the court of Jahangir in 1609 to seek permission to establish a factor at surat…but mission to establish a factory at surat did not succeed due to opposition from portuguese in 1611…. In 1612 captain Thomas Best defeated portuguese in the sea off surat… which impressed jahangir and in 1613 Jahangir granted permission to the English to establish a factory in surat…where they established a permanent factory in 1613… they started trading in masulipatnam in 1611 nd established a factory in 1616.

The company sent Captain Hawkins in CE 1608 , and later sir Thomas Roe in 1615 , to the court of Jahangir. Roe got a farman from Jahangir, which allowed the English East India Company to set up a factory at Surat, Agra, Ahmedabad, Broach, Hugli, Masulipatnam and Madras (now known as Chennai).
