The cycle of energy is based on flow of energy through different trophic level in ecosystem. our ecosystems is maintained by cycling energy and nutrients obtained from different external source........... the herbivores at the second trophic level use the plant as food which gives them energy

The flow of energy in a food chain is unidirectional i.e. the solar energy captured by the green plants cannot revert back to the solar input. In an ecosystem the flow of nutrients is in the cyclic manner. The chemicals which enters the food chain gets accumulated in the body of the top trophic level or higher consumer. This Phenomenon is known as Biological Magnification.

In an Ecosystem 1 Percent of solar energy is converted by green plants into food energy. then, 10 Percent of the energy is retained by the Herbivores, its body weight and it is used by the next level of the Consumer. 90 Percent of the food energy is lost in the form of respiration, growth, and other Metabolic activities. 10 percent os present in each step transfers to the next level of Consumer. This is known as 10 Percent Law. The amount of energy available at each trophic level reduces.

∴ A food chain has 3 to 4 levels only. DUe to loss of energy at each level, very little usable energy remains at the 4th level.

Hope it helps
