GIVEN :

n(U)=20, n(a)=12 , n(b)=9 , n(a\bigcap b)=4 , where u is the universal set , a and b are subsets of U

TO FIND :

The value of the  n(a\bigcup b)^{\prime}

SOLUTION :

Given that n(U)=20, n(a)=12 , n(b)=9 , n(a\bigcap b)=4 , where u is the universal set , a and b are subsets of U

First find  n(a\bigcup b):

The formula is given by

n(a\bigcup b)=n(a)+n(b)-n(a\bigcap b)

Substitute the values we get,

n(a\bigcup b)=12+9-4

=21-4

n(a\bigcup b)=17

∴ the value is n(a\bigcup b)=17

Now we have that ,

n(a\bigcup b)^\prime=n(U)-n(a\bigcup b)

=20-17

=3

n(a\bigcup b)^\prime=3

∴ the value of n(a\bigcup b)^\prime is 3
