Gandhiji sent letter to viceroy Irwin stating 11 demands. The letter was in a way an ultimatum. It was commenced by Congress that if the demands were not accepted a mass led movement would be started.
Viceroy Irwin was unwilling to negotiate. Thus, Gandhiji started salt march to defy the monopoly rights of British over the manufacture of salt and its use. He with his 78 trusted volunteers started the March from his Ashram Sabarmati to Dandi coastal area. He had to travel 240 miles for 24 days covering 10 miles a day. Meanwhile Gandhiji used to conduct a speech where ever he stopped and large masses of people used together to listen to him that what he meant by Swaraj attainment. At last, Gandhiji reached Dandi and manufactured salt over there. This was what known as Salt Satyagraha.
