The Gurkha War is also referred to as the Anglo - Nepalese War. It took place over a period of two years from 1814 to 1816 and was fought between the Gurkha kingdom and the British East India Company.

The treaty of Sugauli signed on 2 December 1815 and ratified in early 1816 brought this war to a close. The salient points of the Treaty of Sugauli were:

1. It defined boundaries for the Kingdom.

2. It allowed the British to appoint a British Resident to be stationed at Kathmandu.

3. The British could recruit Gurkhas to their army, while the Nepalese could not recruit British or American nationals to their services.
