The Ministry of Commerce and Industry administers two departments, the Department of Commerce and the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (formerly Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion). The head of the Ministry is a Minister of Cabinet rank. The incumbent Minister of Commerce and Industry is Suresh Prabhu, who has held the post since 03 September 2017.

Trading and commerce had started from the pre-historic times when the people would trade through the system of barter. They would exchange goods and services with each other without any form of money being used. Thereafter came the system of  trading through gold and silver coins.

Explanation:

• Silk routes were were established which helped in creating pathways for commercial trading and political connects with other foreign kingdoms and other parts of the world.
• Trading helped in establishing large and prosperous kingdoms  through the enormous wealth that was accumulated by the kings and the Emperors in India. India had become an industrious belt due to the wealth collected through some of the important trading centers.
• Over a period of time and with changes in technology commerce has taken a different shape and outlook. Today every country is indulging in free trade and commerce with other countries which is helping them to grow. The latest trend is the e-commerce which is the new form of trading which has taken over the internet
