During the Industrial Revolution, the first modern highway was developed by John Loudon McAdam. In the 17th and 18th century, many new modes of transportation were invented such as bicycles, trains, motor cars, trucks, airplanes, and trams. In 1906, the first car was developed with an internal combustion engine.

In the last 100 years, cars became safer and roads turned from dirt to asphalt or concrete. Vessels on the ocean got bigger and goods moved faster. Engines ran on steam and coal but then switched to diesel power. Hulls were made of steel instead of wood, which led to increases in ship size.

In time, railroads became the most popular form of land transportation in the United States. In 19th-century American culture, railroads were more than just a way to travel.

Many of our Nation's roadways were once dirt and mud paths until the early to mid–1800s. A modern movement at that time called for the building of wooden roads, a great improvement in transportation. These planks-boards-were laid over the roadway on log foundations in various lengths, but most were eight feet long.

Answer:

The history of transportation begins from the human era and continued to change over a period of time. The first means of transportation was the human foot. People used to walk large distances to reach places. Gradually, they started using animals for transportation. Horses, oxen, donkeys and camels were domesticated and used for carrying the load as well people from one place to another.

Around 3500 BCE, the first wheeled vehicles were used. As a means of transporting small loads, wheels were attached to carts and chariots.

Water transport began with the invention of sailing boats, which were made of bundles of long leaves tied together that would float in water. Wooden boats were carved out of huge logs of wood. This went on for centuries, with gradual improvements in the designs of ships, chariots and wagons. Then in 1783, the hot-air balloon was invented.

The introduction of railways made travel faster. In the 1760s and 1770s, the steam engine was developed by James Watt. In the 1800s, the railways became quite widespread. Around the same time, steamships improved the way of water transport.

Between 1817 and 1819, the earliest bicycles were invented and were used practically. Soon after this, motorbikes and cars were developed. The first successful plane flight was made around the 1900s.
