The Jallianwala Bagh atrocities inflicted by General Dyer in Ameritsar
on Baisakhi Day (13 April), were a part of Rowlett Act repression. On
learning about the massacre, Rabindranath Tagore expressed the pain and
anger of the country be renouncing his knight hood. During the Rowlate
Satyagraha the participants tried to ensure that Hindus and Muslims were in
the fight against the British rule.

A public meeting was announced on 13th April, 19191 at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar to protest against the Rowlatt Act ( which gave vast powers to Police to search a place without any warrant and also allowed detention of political prisoners for about 2 years). The people were allowed to assemble there. After they had gathered there in thousands, General Dyer marched there with armoured cars and troops. Without any warning, he ordered firing on the unarmed and the peaceful gathering there. The casualties among the Indians were very heavy. Dyer's purpose behind this action was to create a feeling of terror and awe in the minds of the Satyagrahis.
