On Baisakhi day ( 13 April 1919 ), nearly one thousand people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar to protect against the arrest of leaders Dr. Saifuddin and Dr. Satyapal.

They were unaware of the martial law and gathered Jallianwala Bagh. The bagh was surrounded by the back walls of the houses and had only one exit.

General Dyer blocked the only entrance and opened fire on innocent and peaceful crowd . On learning about the incident, Rabindranath Tagore returned his knighthood.

On 13th April, 1919, the people of Punjab gathered on the auspicious day of Baisakhi at Jallinwala Bagh near Golden temple in Amritsar. When they were protesting peacefully against the arrest of two prominent Congress leaders of Punjab. Genral Dyre ordered the British armed forces to open fire at the hundreds of innocent, unarmed men, women and children.
