The government of India inaugurated this program on 15 August 1995. The purpose of the project is to assist in advancing the effectiveness of fundamental education by promoting the nutritional health of primary school children.

This was the effort to improve admission, maintenance, and participation while simultaneously enhancing nutritional levels among the children in the government school. In the present scenario, this scheme covers nearly 12 crore children.

Midday meal scheme proved to be beneficial for the poor students because by providing free meal it helps to nourish the health of impoverished children.
