The three falls are part of the Niagara River, which forms the U.S./Canada border all the way from the city of Niagara Falls up to Lake Ontario. American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are on the American side of the border, and Horseshoe Falls is on the Canadian side. Bridal Veil Falls is much narrower than the other two. Just a small gap separates it from American Falls, so many people don't even realize that the two falls are separate. The waterfalls are 170 to 180 feet tall, but Horseshoe Falls is more than twice as wide as American Falls. Several islands sit in the river near the falls. The largest, Goat Island, actually adjoins the American and Canadian falls. It's accessible by car and has picnic areas, viewing areas and a restaurant. Visitors can also cross a footbridge to reach the Three Sisters Islands. The Cave of the Winds attraction is accessible from Goat Island. It's a cave located behind Bridal Veil Falls.
Tourist attractions, including plenty of souvenir shops, have sprung up on both sides of the falls.
