 <b><h2><center>RAJYA SABHA</center ></h2></b>The Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of the Parliament. The states participate in the legislative functions, at the centre,, through this house. The maximum strength of the Rajya Sabha is 250 members. Out of them 238 are elected by State Legislative Assemblies and 12 members are nominated by the President from among people, who have distinguished themselves in various fields, e.g. Sports, Journalism, Science, Art. At present, the Rajya Sabha has 245 members, 233 are elected members and 12 are nominated members. The representation of the Indian states in the Rajya Sabha differs from state to state, on the basis of their population.<br> <h4><u>Qualifications:</h4></u>For being a member of the Rajya Sabha, the person should be an Indian citizen and not less than 30 years of age, the other qualifications are the same as that of the Lok Sabha candidate.<br> <br> <h4><u>Elections: </h4></u>The representatives from the states are elected by the elected members of the State Assemblies respectively. Those union territories, which do not have a legislative assembly, the members are elected by an electoral college, respectively, formed in each union territory. <br> <h4><u>Term:</u></h4>The Rajya Sabha is a permanent house and it cannot be dissolved. One-third of its members retire after every two years, so that each member serves for six years. Members can bere-elected. <br> <h4><u>Presiding Officier:</h4></u>Rajya Sabha also has a Chairman and a Deputy Chairman. The Vice President of Indiais the ex-officio (by the virtue of holding an office) Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He presides over the meetings of the Rajya Sabha and regulates its proceedings
