Both are of paramount importance to smooth functioning of the democracy. Considering the largest democratic country like India they both have a vital role to play in the governance.
Simply President is called the Nominal Head of government because all the actions, laws passed under his name, assent or seal. He represents India in the world, Heading the Armed forces, can impose Emergency in the country, appoints n dissolve the council of minister including Pm n so many more functions.

On the other hand the PM is the real executive of india. N the whole Fountainhead of all the powers of government. He heads the Council of ministers n accountable for their actions. He is the head of the NITI ayog.He executes all the laws, orders passed by the government etc…
Cheers!
