Sclerenchyma is the mature, hard protective covering found on most plant stems and bark of trees.
They are made up of dead cells and as such are hard and non-elastic. These cells are composed mainly of lignin that does not rot but provides the required hardness for support of the plants or trees and protection from external elements. Sclerenchyma are usually found in the non-developing parts of plants and trees.
