This chapter argues that the Populist movement was a political manifestation of a rebellion of the lower classes against the Democrats. Time and again, the rank-and-file members expressed the notion that the Democratic Party eschewed the values of traditional republicanism and Jacksonian democracy. Thus, while some joined the Populists to enact a new county government and election law in the state, and others found the Populist banner of “equal rights to all and special privileges to none” compelling, all of these voters shared a strong respect for traditional republican governmental values and participatory democracy.
