Answer:

Ryots were reluctant to grow indigo because:

1-They were given a loan from English Planters to grow Indigo, and after harvest, they were supposed to give plants to clear debts. This way, ryots were forced to stay tangled in the cycle of debts.

2-The prices given to ryots were only 25% of the original price.

3-Growing indigo in their fertile lands was decreasing the land's fertility.

Answer:

Ryots reluctant to grow indigo:

When British came to India and started taking interest in Indigo cultivation. They forced the ryots to sign a contract to grow Indigo on their land. Those who signed the contract had to pay the money in advance to grow Indigo. After harvesting the indigo plant they gave the indigo to the British planters and again they were given a new loan to Indigo cultivation. Loan which was given was very low and they were always in debt. Indigo was grown on a fertile soil and it decreased the fertility of soil because farmer wanted to grow rice on their land.
