Determine that things can and shall be done and then we shall find the way. – Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was a great visionary and he helped transform America from the throes of poverty and slavery into a young, vibrant and forward looking nation. Our country too is blessed with one such visionary, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931, Tamil Nadu, India, usually referred to as Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, was the eleventh President of India, serving from 2002 to 2007. During his term as the President, he was popularly known as the People’s President.
Dr. Kalam took up academic pursuit as Professor, Technology and Societal Transformation at Anna University, Chennai and was involved in teaching and research tasks. Above all, he has been on his mission to ignite the young minds for national development by meeting high school students across the country.
Since independence, India has sought in various ways, to harness scientific technology to secure for its people, a life free of want, but free from fear, as well. A P J Abdul Kalam’s life is the manifestation of a journey through personal and professional struggle, to self-realization and also to adulation and success.
His life is a paradigm for the youth of our country. His contribution to the scientific field and his writings form an inspiring and a motivating actor which instills a belief that anything can be achieved with a strong determination and will. In his book ‘Wings of Fire’ he mentions,
‘To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal. Individuals like me are often called ‘workaholics’, I question this term because that implies a pathological condition or an illness. If I do what I desire more than anything else in the world and which makes me happy, such work can never be an aberration.’
It is his desire that India be transformed into a developed nation in the near future. This can be done by us Indians, the common man with uncommon goals. He believes that the people of this nation have the power, by means of sheer hard work, to realize their dream of a truly good life. He finds a unique mix of belief and knowledge that sets us apart from the other nations of the world. The biggest flaw that he sees in the current generation of youth is the general mindset of limited achievement. Dr. Kalam calls for us to re-evaluate our goals and aim for a higher path, which will lead us to an overall development of the country and it will ultimately benefit the common man.
