Women played an important role in the anti imperial movement in vietnaam. Writers and thinkera idealised women who rebelled against social norms. The trung sister struggle against chinese domination was highlighted in a play by phan boi chau . Trieu au who had also struggled against chinese , was also revered and glorified .

After the US involvement in vietmaan war grew in 1960s, women were potrayed as brave rebels and fighters who participated in combat. They helped in nursing the wounded, contucting underground tunnels and rooms and fighting the enemy. Women also gaurded the ho chi minh trail.Towards the end of conflict they also worked as factory workers.
