The lady with the heavy legs
and varicose hose
laboured her way to reach the door
then tightly bend and push
through low letter-box
a clutch of coupons
selling things
at ten pence off
and five pence off
and two pence off
and a summer snowball competition.
Tight bending done
commercial mum
trudged heavy legs
back up the path
her second best coat
insulating weary perspiration.
Today her children
had not clutched that well loved garment
earlied to school
with sparse maternal ceremony
dust and dishes behind her
she left
to compromise the suburbs.
