There was a learned Brahmin who lived at the outskirts of a city with his wife Shandilin. They were a  happy couple but they were poor.The Brahmin had a friend who was very loyal to him. The Brahmin taught his strange friend numerous things. He taught him philosophy and ancient wisdom of the gods.

His friend learnt very well and became adept at things. This pleased the Brahmin very much. He used to boast to his wife that he was accomplishing something in life. His wife would hear none of it.

Unbeknownst to the Brahmin, his friend was a young prince who had ran away from the neighboring kingdom. His young friend later went away.

The Brahmin was sad for several months and could not eat.One day while he was playing his flute, he saw a Royal procession passing by. He quickly rushed and begged for alms.He was shocked to see his young friend dressed in royal garb.He could not believe it! He summoned his courage and called out "Have mercy on an old friend, Your Highness" He cried out.

The young king looked at him and shook his head.He the said, "I pity you Brahmin, when were friends, it was because we both had nothing.Now I am the King"

The Brahmin could not believe that he had been betrayed by his best friend.

         He took the bag to his home and told his wife. They both were very honest through. They decided to deposit the bag to the king and did the same. The king was pleased with their honesty and gifted them a piece of land for cultivation".
