Lesson Summary

Roald Dahl's The BFG is a story about a friendly giant known as The BFG who collects and gives good dreams to children, and an orphan named Sophie. Together, The BFG and Sophie, with help from the Queen of England, help to rid the world of the child-eating giants.

Explanation:

The BFG was written by author Roald Dahl in 1982. The main character first got his start in another one of Roald Dahl's books, Danny, the Champion of the World. Dahl himself has even said that this is probably his favorite book that he has written! Maybe it will become one of your favorites as well!

One of the main characters in the book is The BFG, of course! His full name is The Big Friendly Giant, but everyone calls him The BFG for short. The BFG is a nice giant who captures good dreams and then at night gives them to children. The BFG also speaks in a sort of strange way, called ''gobblefunk.'' The other main character in the book is Sophie, an orphan. One night she sees The BFG giving good dreams to children in a building down the street from the orphanage.

Some other characters that are in the book are the nine other giants who aren't at all like The BFG. They eat humans, especially children! A final important character is the Queen of England. Sophie and The BFG go to her to ask for help with the other giants.
