The part of peninsular plateau lying to north of Narmada river, is known as Central Highlands. The flow of rivers draining this region, namely chambal, sind, betwa and ken.The eastward extensions of the plateau are known as Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand.

Roughly the shape of the peninsular plateau is triangular . the average height of the plateau is 600 - 900 m above sea level . its two mains divisions are highlands and Deccan plateau.
