Swapan Majumder doesn’t remember how his family crossed over to India during the 1971
Bangladesh
War. He was just three then, and can vaguely recall the journey from Bikrampur, his parents’ worried faces and the desperate struggle with the little money they had. But even today, at the age of 49, what he does remember are the trees. “It was a huge, green canopy on both sides of Jessore
Road
. It guarded us from the sun and we spent our days under the trees, making it our temporary home. Then my father put up a tea stall under a big mahogany tree near
Guma
and we built our home there,” he says. During the floods of 2002, the trees saved their lives. In 2005, lightning struck during a storm, but the mahogany tree bore the brunt and saved their home.
Like Swapan,
Gouri Shankar
De came to India penniless and landless, but way back in 1948. Despite being a brilliant student and hailing from a zamindar family, he had to start life afresh in India. When he finished his PhD in history from Jadavpur University, he took up teaching in Sri Chaitanya Mahavidyalaya College at Habra, choosing the institution over many other bigger colleges in Kolkata. “This was the closest I could get to Bangladesh. On my way to India down Jessore Road in 1948, I saw the trees of Bangladesh. The landscape did not change even after crossing the border, because the same trees were on this side too. They made me feel at home, as they still do, even after 70 years,” says the octogenarian.
But for hundreds, even thousands, of people who have crossed the India-Bangladesh border over the years, Jessore Road may change forever. If a government plan is implemented, over 4,000 trees that line the road may be hacked down to widen the thoroughfare. Many of the trees — over half of them are priceless mahogany — are over 150 years old and have a girth of over 40 feet. Cutting them down will result in irreparable social and cultural loss. “If the trees are cut, it will be like 1971 again. I will have to leave my shop and go somewhere else to start,” laments Swapan.

THE HISTORY OF THE ANCIENTS
The tree-cutting, first mooted in 2015, is being fought tooth and nail in Calcutta High Court by the Barasat branch of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR). After their PIL in March, the high court has put a stay on the murder of these trees, but not before 60-odd trees out of the 4,036 have been hacked down in the Bongaon and Guma areas.
What the authorities fail to realise is that cutting down the trees on Jessore Road is not the same as
tree felling
and replanting drives elsewhere. Some of the trees on this stretch go back to before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. “It may surprise you, but this road is here today because of Chakdaha in Nadia district,” says historian Gouri Shankar as we take a drive to Petrapole down
Jessore Road
.
In the early 19th century, Chakdaha was a prominent trading centre in undivided Bengal and also a pilgrimage, as devotees who could not travel to Benaras or Haridwar, would take a holy dip in the Ganga there. In 1826, an affluent goldsmith named Kali Prasad Poddar from Bangladesh’s Jessore built a road from Jessore to Chakdaha via Bongaon for pilgrims.
It took around five years to complete the 160 km stretch. Some trees were planted during that time, with many more being planted over the next 50 to 75 years by the British, who had bungalows in Barasat and Bongaon. “There is a fascinating history of these trees. Mahogany and shirish are foreign species,” says Gouri Shankar. William Roxburgh, the first director of the
Botanic Gardens
in Shibpur, brought many foreign plants to the garden in the late 18th century. “Both shirish and mahogany are from the West Indies. The trees on Jessore Road are descendants of the saplings brought by Roxburgh,” adds the historian. Another story suggests Kali Prasad Poddar owner refuses to be named, as he “has to stay here and live”, but reveals that his grandfather had set up the shop. “During his time, there was a .
