Answer:

Rote learning refers to the learning that happens when something is repeated time and again, almost making it a mechanical process. There is no understanding involved, only memorization.

Explanation:

Rote learning should be discouraged in children because of many reasons:

1. It kills the creativity of learning- When a child has to simply mug up notes, learning is reduced to a monotonous task. There is no joy in picking up new things. Rote learning encourages the child to develop a negative mindset towards learning and education for the rest of the life.

2. It limits a learner’s abilities- When a concept has been memorized and not understood, the child will not know how to apply the knowledge well. Thus, even though a child may have been smart to begin with, over the years, rote learning, reduces the child’s ability to put knowledge into practice. Also, the child will be unable to handle application-based questions in tests or exams.

3. It adds to the stress of studies- Since rote learning depends completely on repetition and memorization, it becomes crucial for the child to run over the complete syllabus and learn it at the last minute. It requires a lot of time, often at the cost of sleep. This causes both mental and physical fatigue, which also adds to the overall stress and the child’s performance suffers, causing additional stress.

Thus, rote learning starts a vicious cycle which is hard to break especially since children get very accustomed to mugging up concepts. Therefore, the earlier it is discouraged, the better it is for the learners.
