Hobbies are an important part of life because of their effect on personality, health and social circle. A hobby is an activity that one pursues during one’s free time. While certain things like studies are compulsory, hobbies are purely optional. An individual can choose a hobby according to one’s interests. Examples of hobbies include philately, singing, dance, woodworking, paper crafts, art, threadwork and gardening
Hobbies define personality. For instance, someone who is a reader will most likely also be very imaginative and creative. Thus, hobbies help add a new dimension to the personality and make a person more knowledgeable about a field of his/her own choice. Hobbies also provide one with a career option. They do wonders for an individual's confidence levels.
Also, given the hyper- competitive world that we live in today, stress build up is a serious concern. Instead of opting for medication, simply pursuing a hobby helps one relax and destress. It can thus be said to have healing properties as well.
Further, while one has a circle of school friends and friends from the neighbourhood, it is not always possible to find a friend who shares the same interests, in say instrumental music. Having a hobby helps form yet another social circle, but one in which the others are equally passionate about the hobby. So, there is more learning, more sharing of ideas and more expression of the self.
Considering the many benefits of having a hobby, it is not difficult to understand how a hobby contributes to a person's overall well-being.
