As India celebrates its National Sports Day on 29th
August, we remember our greatest field hockey player Sri Dhyan Chand. He was the most accomplished hockey player
during 1920s to 1940s and Padma Bhushan award winner. It is good to
also know that he was a three time Olympic Gold medal winner. He was the best dribbler of the ball and was
also called magician on the ground.
Rio Olympics have seen the rise of two young daughters of India to the occasion and bring medals in the last few days of the summer games to end medal drought of India. First, it was 24 yr old Sakshi Malik from Haryana who won a bronze medal in 58 kg wrestling. Sakshi showed a great fighting spirit to turn the table upside down and won after being down by many points. She proved right the quote “where there is a will, there is a way.” Heads rose high and the Flag flew in Rio and hot dry hearts got cooled. P.V. Sindhu of Telangana won a Silver medal in shuttle Badminton in an exciting fight. Also, Dipa Karmarkar reached the highest ever by an Indian by racing to the 4th in Gymnastics event “Vault”. She was the first female gymnast from India in Olympics ever.
There were tremendous performances by Sania M & Bopanna in Lawn Tennis, Srikant in Badminton. The gun/pistol shooters, rowing team and archers also won hearts of viewers and were praised by international commentators. Saina, the shuttler and the shooters did good in the previous years have failed to hit the medal this time.
Decades ago there were only a few famous sports persons. Sports persons were not respected. India was not able to fund sports activities. Talent in rural areas did not get encouragement. Sports were limited to physical exercises and enjoyment. It did not nurture talent at international levels. In the last 4 decades Indian cricket has risen to the top 3 world ranks. Mary Kom, Sachin Tendulkar, Shiny Abraham, Deepika Kumari, Sushil Kumar, Gagan Narang, Bindra, Malleswari, Y Dutt etc. have shined like rare stars now and then. Premier leagues have commenced in sports like Kabaddi, Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, and Football, since a few years like they are held in other continents. These events being commercial, entertainer and skill developing, they will take Indian talent towards International levels soon. The money involved is in millions and billions.
A career in sports was not an attractive one earlier. Now there are many openings and remunerative too. High quality stadia, equipment, coaches and techniques are still required to be given to the youth so that sportsmen and sportswomen of high quality can come up. There have been many accusations of corruption, mismanagement, negligence, ill-treatment of athletes by officials over the last many decades. This point is to be taken care of by the government so that talent grows.
Sports are required for physical, mental health and growth of youth. Also, in today’s world sports are also prestige for the country. The highest officials like president, prime minister, chief ministers like to associate themselves with sports teams and persons. It has been shown time and again that Indians can rise to occasions and can win. It is important to note that other countries are improving their performances each year. If Sports-India-mission wants India to have the same or more pride in the coming years, there is no option but to encourage sports and games at all costs. Playing is not the only aim, winning is quite important. If we don’t win a medal, a million hearts are lost & sunk.
As Indians are making their mark in technology and education, they are lagging behind in industries and in sports. A national level to state level to district level to rural level drive is necessary to make sports a part of Indian son’s and daughter’s daily curriculum. In 2016 we are still talking of toilets in schools. So I suppose we need a decade at least for many schools to have large play grounds and equipment for all games and sports. Also, there is a bias and excess focus on cricket and negligence on other sports. The fact that sports are in the blood of Indian people is shown by popularity of films in Hindi and in regional languages on sports and sports persons.
Finally,
we need to realize that sports give us fitness, health and longer life as well
as fame, money, medals and pride. These were not given priority earlier. There is no uniformity over our land of sports events and talent. But care
and high priority action are needed as huge funds are now spent on sports activities. As
we are the 2nd most populous country, it’s reasonable to hope for world
class excellence. What we need is a “Mission Medal” and not “Mission Participation.”
