My favorite teacher is Ms Susan, my English teacher. She is very lively and makes the class very interesting. Thus, it is no wonder that I enjoy my English classes a lot. This year I invited her for my birthday party at home.

When Ms Susan came, she got me a lot of novels as a birthday gift. She also called me home to her place for tea that weekend. I accepted her invitation and went over on Saturday. She took me to her library and I was surprised at her collection of books. After some time, we went for a walk to a neighboring park. As we went, she told me about her childhood and how her father used to encourage her to read. She bought her first novel at the age of 10. Ms Susan still had the book in her library.

My English teacher also told me about many great writers of English fiction like William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Tom Sawyer. I was quite impressed by how much she knew and asked her about it. She laughed heartily and told me that she did her MA in English literature and had to study about them. I decided that I would also pursue my course in English literature like her and asked her how I can go about it. She asked me if I really wanted to do this course because it was not as easy as learning English in school. I sad that I was sure of what I wanted to do. My English teacher then suggested that I do a lot of reading on various types of English literature. She also promised me that she would help me gain access to various English classics and poetry.

Next Friday when I was about to get into the school bus after the last period, Ms Susan called me to the staffroom and told me to meet her at her home next day evening at 4 pm. I agreed to do so and went home wondering what it was. I landed at her door at the exact time she told me. Ma’am was waiting for me and she took me to the nearest library. She got me a membership in the library and helped me pick out a few books to start reading. From that day, I adopted reading as a serious hobby. Every day after my studies, just before going to bed, I started reading at least 10 pages of a novel. During holidays and weekends, I read a little more. This habit continues to this day.

One day, Ms Susan told me that she was leaving the school in a week’s time as she had to relocate to her native place due to some personal reasons. I could not believe what I had heard and started crying. She consoled me and gave me her address and phone number saying we could always keep in touch through letters and occasional phone calls. That day, I told my parents and went home with her. I wanted to be with her for as long as possible. Unfortunately, I could not pursue my higher studies in English literature but I have not given up my passion for reading. I still keep in touch with Ms Susan but for whom I would have missed the joy of reading in my life.
