THE PICKPOCKET
The sun hung merrily in the sky sparkling down on mankind in all its resplendent glory. It was an ordinary day at the bus stop. The usual hustle and bustle of city life continued. The place was yet another enclave of modern civilization - an urban landscape.
People were anticipating for the bus to arrive. Amongst them was a young boy, who was no more than twelve years old. He had disheveled hair and tanned skin. He donned an old white t-shirt on which one could make out a vague print stating, ‘King’. He wore a pair of tattered jeans and seasoned slippers. He looked feeble as if he was suffering from malnutrition. The boy’s name was Raj. He belonged to a humble family and lived on the roadside with his mother in a makeshift tent. He had never been to school. His conditions had made this good boy a pickpocket.
The bus arrived and people started jostling at each other to board the bus. Raj quietly tried to put his hand in a man’s pocket to pilfer his wallet, but for the first instance ever, the victim realized it and caught him red handed. He could not believe that his day could get any worse. Furthermore, he discovered that the guy who had caught him was a guardian of the law- a police officer.
For this, he was sent to a Juvenile prison. The prison authorities were austere yet kind-hearted. In that prison, kids do some activities every day. Besides this, they are given elementary education and are taught languages like Hindi and English. In accession to this, they have one hour every day during which they watch television or play games on the prison ground. One French comic movie that his mates watched caught his eye one day. He took interest in the series and yearned to learn the language. He requested prison authorities for the same, to which they promptly agreed. Raj was quick to master the language.
A couple of years later, when he walked out as a free boy, he resolved to turn over a new leaf. He started working as a French guide. Moreover, he began to earn a living. He assists French tourists to understand India’s vibrant culture and heritage. Now he resides in a rented apartment with his mom who had suffered adversely for the two years during which her son was in the reformatory. Today, no one can tell that this is the same boy who was previously a pickpocket.
