PALM BEACH — An elusive cat burglar who police believe has stolen more than $400,000 in jewelry from a luxury hotel in Palm Beach in the last year almost slipped up on Sunday. Two security guards at The Breakers hotel had him cornered near an elevator, but the burglar escaped after spraying the guards in the face with Mace.``This guy is really good,`` said police Sgt. Michael Galvin. ``But at least we know what he looks like now.``Galvin said the same burglar is suspected of pulling two other major hotel room break-ins at The Breakers and another in Bal Harbour since March 1985. In each case, the suspect crept into the hotel rooms while the occupants slept and walked out with large quantities of valuable jewelry.Galvin said the burglar, a man in his 50s, is so good that he doesn`t even wake his victims. At least he didn`t until Sunday.About 3 a.m., the burglar had just finished stealing nearly $250,000 in jewelry from a fifth-floor room when a woman awoke and screamed, Galvin said.``He made a mistake,`` said Detective Lt. Tom Perry. ``He panicked and ran down to the fourth floor. Two guards heard a fire door slam and found him next to an elevator.``The guards asked the man, who was dressed in agray pullover sweater and gray slacks, if he was aguest at the hotel, Perry said. His response was to pull out a can of Mace and spray them in the face.In the confusion, they did not see how the man escaped, Perry said. The stolen jewelry included:An eight-carat pear-shaped diamond on a platinum ring valued at $40,000.Two diamond bracelets, each containing 60 diamonds set in 14-karat white gold valued at$6,000 each.A pair of clip-on diamond and 14-karat gold earrings valued at $10,000.A two-strand choker with a 14-karat white gold clasp studded with diamonds valued at $10,000.A 1 1/2-inch oval pin of 14-karat gold, studded with diamonds in a pave setting and valued at$5,000.A 14-karat gold giraffe-shaped pin with tree branches and leaves, containing diamonds, rubies and emeralds, valued at $4,000.Police would not release the name of the victim, but Perry said none of the stolen jewelry was insured. He said the gold probably will be melted down and the jewels removed from their settings and sold. The FBI has been contacted because the loss is more than $50,000.According to Galvin, the burglar has been linked to three other burglaries, two at The Breakers on March 2, 1985 and another at a Bal Harbour Hotelnear Miami Beach on March 30, 1985. In the first two Breakers burglaries, $150,000 in jewelry was stolen from two rooms. In all three break-ins, the burglar used the same method to enter the rooms, Galvin said. While police would not say how the rooms were entered, Galvin said the rooms were somehow ``prepped,`` to allow the burglar easier access.
