Write a summary:
During the 19th century, the influence of the French Revolution spread to Latin America and the Caribbean adding a spark to an already tense situation. Strict social divisions and economic disparity had caused a rift between then various social classes created during the era of colonialism. The spread of enlightenment ideas had pointed out to many educated Latin Americans the unjust system in which most people were forced to live under European rule. When news of the French Revolution spread, and Europe became occupied with its own struggles, many Latin Americans, inspired by the French Revolutionaries, rose up against their colonial masters. During the 19th century countries in South and Central America and the Caribbean won their Independence from European control.
Unfortunately Independence did not bring the liberty, equality and fraternity the Libertadores had sought in the French model. Independence brought with it disunity, and conflicts amongst the new nations of the Americas caused further bloodshed and suffering. The social inequality that had inspired revolution to a large extent was reestablished, and widespread poverty continues to affect a large percentage of Latin America's population today. In large part a dream unfulfilled, the revolutions in Latin America are significant for their rejection of European dominion and rising sense of nationalism tied to indigenous roots. The issues of disunity, poverty and social inequality that plague Latin America in the present are directly tied to the effects of 19th century revolution and independence. Despite the failures of the revolutions to deliver on their promises of freedom, unity and equality, these goals continue to be pursued as the region confronts its lack of development and high poverty rates in the 21st century.
