Answer:
An ancient arbitrary custom that prevailed in India for centuries is Sati or Suttee, the practice of making a wife immolate herself on the top of her husband funeral pyre. The burning if a widow was mandatory but it was, naturally, cruel and inhumane. The rate of practising sati in the districts of Bengal and the other area under the rule of the hindu Rajputs were increasing heart-wrenchingly.
At first, it was ignored by the brutish British government and continued to be in fatal practice. But then with the help of Governor general of British India, Lord Bentick, Raja Ram Mohan Roy was able to demolish the Sati practice as it was declared to be legally punishable.
