The simple answer will be - through 3 things -

1. Introspection  2. Self Control  3. Contentment

To elaborate a little:

Greed means an excessive feeling of want or desire for something, usually something material or temporal like wealth, power, food etc It also connotes a continuous trend i.e the goal posts keep shifting. Even as you get what you desire, you only want more.

Greed falls into two stages or takes two forms :

1. The simple (or initial) feeling of voracious desire

2. The later or addictive spiraling into a mania.

The first is a general human problem. The second progresses into the realm of a psychiatric affliction.

The first stage could develop into the second. Or the second could be a symptom on its own. (A qualified psychiatrist could explain this better)

How do we deal with this?

1. We first recognize and accept this. And accept this as a problem.

(Most people think that accepting a problem within oneself is a weakness. On the contrary its a sign of strength and common sense)

2. If its just greed, then introspect and exercise self control. Learn to be content with what you have already got. Learn to experience and savour what you have fully and completely.

3. But if it shows signs of being the beginnings of the second, then recognize it for what it is. Acceptance is half the battle won. Handle it with self control and other mechanisms like alternating wants, habits and activities. Tie up your money or time or resources or energy in other commitments.

4. Take professional help if necessary. Better sooner than later.

5. Introspection and philosophy could help if one is inclined that way.
