Atomic spectra. When atoms are excited they emit light of certain wavelengths which corresponds to different colours. the emitted light can be seen as a series of coloured lines with dark spaces in between this series of coloured line is called atomic spectra....

ANSWER :

ATOMIC SPECTRA :

When we pass the radiations coming out of the discharge tube are passed through a prism, the rays get dispersed.

Some rays disperse more and some disperse less in wavelength.

The shorter wavelength rays disperse more whereas longer wavelength rays disperse less because longer wavelength rays have smaller frequency but shorter wavelength rays have less frequency.

Generally ,the electrons jump to higher energy orbits by absorbing energy.

The spectrum obtained is known as absorption spectrum. Such spectra will have dark lines corresponding to the wavelengths that have been absorbed.

The electrons jumping back to lower energy orbits release energy. The spectrum obtained is known as emission spectrum. Such spectra will have bright lunes corresponding to the wavelengths that have been released.

Each element gives a unique spectrum.

EXAMPLE :

Sodium always gives a spectral line in the yellow region of the spectrum.
