the Balkans was a region of geographical and ethnic variation composed of modern day Romania, Bulgaria,Albania,Greece,Macedonia,Croatia,Bosnia,etc who were broadly known as Slavs. a large part of Balkans were under the ottoman empire . the spread of romantic nationalism ideas in Balkans and the disintegration of the ottoman empire made this issue explosive. the ottoman empire tried to strengthen itself through modernization and internal reforms but it had very little success. the empire's European subject nationalities broke away and declared independence. the Balkans based their claims for independence but using history saying that they were once independent and foreign powers dominated them and they need independence. this paved way for world war one as at that time each power- Russia , Germany, England,austro-Hungary were keen on holding power over Balkans . the major powers were also fiercely jealous of each other.
