Early nationalists or moderates successfully achieved assertive nationalism (1905–1916). The early nationalists were unable to achieve their goals by creating extremist / assertive nationalism. During the final years of the 19th century, some Indian intellectuals such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak Bipin Chandra Pal, and Lala Lajpat Rai developed radical sensitivity. They were all recognized as assertive nationalists together. They dismissed the previous notions of moderates of prayer, protest or requests or the 3Ps. Then, they started to embrace radical initiatives like Swadeshi and Boycott and publicly accused the British of India’s economic crisis. They played a crucial role India’s independence movement
EXPLANATION:
- Around 1905 and 1918 a new and younger group of congressional leaders came into being that did not agree with the Techniques and Ideology of the Moderates, who were called "assertive nationalists”. Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandrapal were three prominent leaders of the Assertive Party.
- They were part of Lal-Bal-Pal, the popular trio. There was also a huge argument between early nationalists and assertive Nationalists about the disparity in philosophies and methods of expressing their frustration. While the Moderates wanted to achieve Swaraj by way of constitutional means, the radicals wanted to do this by manipulating the government.
- The Surat Split (1907) was the reason for this episode during the National Indian Congress. Methods of Assertive Nationalists were passive resistance, failure to co-operate with the British government, and through the boycott of foreign goods, and so on. The Assertive Nationalist revealed the true character of the British Rule. The Swadeshi and Boycott campaigns promoted self-reliance. They have also founded several educational institutions. The middle classes were taken into the national movement.
