In 1880 Durgacharan Ray wrote Debganer Martye Aagamen in which Bramha, the creater of Hindu mythology took a train to Calcutta with some oter gods . They were so imressed by the other marvels. The gods saw that on one side there were so much development on trade commerce, education and jobs. But on other side they saw the grinding poverty and the poor quality of housing, dirtiness, etc.
The book was written in 1880. Debganer Martye Aagaman means The Gods visits Earth. In this novel Durgacharan Ray puts forward his story in which Brahma, the Hindu god along with other gods comes on a visit to the Capital of the British Indian Empire - Calcutta. The gods are taken on a tour of the city
by the Rain god Varuna. The story is about how the Gods are wonderstruck by the big, modern city, the train, the large ships on the Ganga rivers, the factories that are giving out smoke, the bridges and the monuments, the large number of shops that are selling a wide range of commodities. They get so impressed by the Capital city that they decide to build a High Court and a Museum in the heaven too.
The story also depicts the advantages of the modern life. The opportunities for trade and commerce, education and jobs. There are also the downsides of the modern life like people losing moral values and becoming cheats and thieves, the tremendous poverty and the poor quality of housing etc.
