Gregor Mendel now known as the Father of Genetics conducted hybridisation experiments during the period from 1856 - 1863 in the plant PISUM SATIVUM (Pea Plant ). He published his findings in the proceeding of Natural History Society of Brunn in 1856. He established that certain “factors” (now called GENES) are being stably passed down from parents to offsprings over successive generations. But he was unable to explain what exactly they are. He was the one to put forth the Principles of Inheritance.

His findings were independently rediscovered by three scientists in 1900 - Correns, Hugo de Vries, Tschermak.
