The attitude of a community towards its language is called language attitude. Language attitude represents the feelings of people towards their own language variety or the languages of others. Often, a community is proud of its language and tends to use this language for interacting with other communities as well. At times, the influence of a community’s language can be felt on another language when people of that community speak the second language. Additionally, the attitude of a community towards its language can help a person form an overall judgement of the social status, personality, and character of people of that community among various other aspects.

Language attitude refers to the feelings or beliefs of people about their own language or the language of others. Attitudes are actually personal feelings or beliefs. But a common pattern of attitudes can be seen in a community.

For example, people may feel that an unwritten language is not real. A community may feel proud about their language or may feel ashamed to speak in their own language in front of others.

People of a community may feel that their language is superior to others. They may feel more close to the people who speak their language. They may exhibit a loyalty towards their mother tongue.

Some people may feel that the national language is the best language as it offers educational and job opportunities. They may feel their own language to be inferior to it.
