Answer:

When liquid water is confined in a tube, itssurface (meniscus) has a concave shape because water wets the surface and creeps up the side. Mercury does not wet glass - the cohesive forces within the drops are stronger than the adhesive forces between the drops and glass.

Surface of the liquidis upper concave In this case, the force due to surface tension f_T , on the molecule at B is vertically upwards. The force f_A due to atmospheric pressure acts downwords. Forces f_A and f_Tthus, act in opposite direction. Therefore, the net downward force responsible for the pressure at B is less than f_A . This develops a lesser pressure at point B, which is inside the liquid and on the convex side of the meniscus. Thus, the pressure on the concave side i.e., outside the liquid, is greater than that on the convex side, i.e., inside the liquid.
